asses.masses
The age of the donkeys is over. They were once valued for their labour, but they have long since been replaced by machines. They are left to fend for themselves on the pastures and sooner or later end up in the slaughterhouse. High time for a revolution! Ass power!
«asses.masses» is a video game about work, technophobia and sharing the burden of revolution. It was developed to be played live in the theatre. Audience members take turns at the controller to lead the herd through a post-industrial society in the fight against redundancy.
If you miss individual sections of the show, you miss important parts of the narrative. For this playful Sunday afternoon, come to the start of the performance, as is customary at the theatre. Food and drinks will be available during the four intermissions. The food is included in the ticket price.
Patrick Blenkarn and Milton Lim are conceptual artists exploring urgent questions around the social value of art, digital labour, and the political potential of games. Mixing their backgrounds in performance, philosophy, psychology, and digital media, their collaborations have manifested in video games, participatory installations, digital archives, and card games. Blenkarn and Lim are the co-founders of the Canadian national video archive of performance (videocan) and the co-creators behind a performing arts economy trading card game (culturecapital), a role playing game about cultural design (FARCE), and an escape room intervention in a German museum (FUNFUG FORUM).
Easy Read
This is a video game. It is shown on a large screen. One person can play at a time. The others watch and cheer on. It's about a herd of donkeys. They have lost their jobs because machines have been invented. So they start to rebel.
